This is arguably the one thing that’s driven Musk’s whole miserable career. His actual engineering skill throughout his entire career is, by all the many accounts I’ve heard, somewhere between mediocre and complete fuckup — in the few instances where it’s even been relevant at all. But he’s really good at working tropes and learning shibboleths and using the “shiny thing” allure of tech to project social power, and people are still falling for it.
