Examples would be white people who everyone thought were perfect neighbors turning out to be dreadful people when a Black family moves in.

I guess what puzzles me about that is why the kindness to the in-group? How does that work? What's happening in their brains?

I get the racist MAGA uncles... they're mean and nasty to lots of people—it all makes sense—but when I'm faced with someone who has been nothing but sweet, kind, and understanding to me (externally at least) being an absolute POS to someone they're bigoted against, what am I observing happening?

What the fuck is that and how and why does it happen? Can I learn how to avoid these hypocritical assholes altogether?

@artemis i'm super familiar with this type of person from my time in the #consent debates. predators don't predate on everybody. in fact, it's usually the opposite, as you're observing.

they're super cool people, pillars of the fucking community often. but then there's that weaker person, the perfect victim, whatever criteria they use to select a victim who won't be believed, won't be supported, etc etc etc
