Nobody likes Discord and all the chatter is that it's full speed down on enshittification creek.
IRC would work, but it's extremely basic.
Matrix appears to be meant to fill just that space between the two, but opinions about its performance seem to be very divided.
Does anyone have other suggestions to share? (Something federated would be neat.)
