My wife just shared with me that one of her colleagues has her son at home for a two week visit right now.

He's a student at Harvard. His visa has just been revoked and he cannot return to the US.

His life, his academic career, all his belongings - just cut off. Extraordinary. What a global humiliation this US fascism is.

@jdmcg oh that's incredibly awful 😞 it's probably a blessing that he's visiting home, at least it means he's avoiding whatever the deportation process looks like... i can't believe how quickly things are accelerating towards rock bottom

@Sbectol @lucky @jdmcg in their home country you mean? Because if they can’t get back in they can’t transfer to another university here.

This is so dumb (this ruling & hatred for foreigners), international students don’t get federal student loans so they’re paying out of pocket, unlike those of us who used federal student loans and had them forgiven or deferred them forever.

And I’m not saying people didn’t pay their student loans, I’m just saying some of us had them forgiven or don’t pay them. Those international students bring money to America and I thought that was one of the main goals for these fascists.

@maggiejk @Sbectol @lucky @jdmcg "they’re paying out of pocket" i fear that is one part of the intent here - to cut even more funding from Harvard cause they dared to resist.

@monkee @maggiejk @Sbectol @lucky @jdmcg also completely misdirected because grad research students generally don't pay out of pocket at all – one of the biggest attractions of strong US universities is that they provide enough funding to cover your fees, living and research costs. I received a standard funding package (it involved four semesters of leading tutorial groups, but was otherwise unencumbered), and several project grants, and we saved enough to put down a house deposit after graduating. I went to the US, not the UK, because I could afford it. And to Australia before that, again because the funding offered meant that I could afford it.

The exceptions are a small number of people bringing huge scholarships like a Fulbright (which comes from the US anyway) or from their home government. Grad students paying their own way do exist but they're quite uncommon outside business and law schools, generally not research students. The oval office may have no idea about this, not being famed for its high-flying intellects.

@libroraptor @maggiejk @Sbectol @lucky @jdmcg Thanks for the details - i know little about how US Universities work.

Trump goons do not care who they hurt. They demand submission. 😢

Hope the US still can prevent that awful downward spiral we all see (Observing from Switzerland)
