Today Anthropic joins the Blender Development Fund as corporate sponsor.

@Blender This is so disappointing. What alternative exists now that Blender is taking slopcorp money?

Today Anthropic joins the Blender Development Fund as corporate sponsor. This support will be dedicated towards general Blender core development. More details at https://www.blender.org/press/anthropic-joins-the-blender-development-fund-as-corporate-patron/

Note: partially reworded the social media announcement so it sounds less tone-deaf about the controversial nature of the membership.

@thibaultmol @dannotdaniel @UkeleleEric @eden @Blender but you're sitting here and defending that it's "just a monetary donation". Fam, Claude code is used to kill children, an entire school of children. Why in the world are you out here defending this donation and then using your clout as a FOSDEM member to back it up? What do you think you're helping? Delete or update your comments and be better. No one needs more random white guys coming in to say "gold is gold". That's nazi shit.

@Blender@mastodon.social Could you kindly don’t?

@Blender even if this does not give anthropic any control over blender, the messaging is tone deaf, especially on the fediverse. If you're going to accept money from a company as toxic as Anthropic, the announcement needs to at the very least critique them, not blandly heap praise for the donation. Community trust is hard to win and easy to lose, so I would think hard about the message this post is sending to your community.
@desttinghim I try to keep messaging consistent and not cater to specific audiences. That would be misleading. Criticizing Anthropic is not going to help, what we actually do with the funding matters.

@Blender@mastodon.social the only way you can reword it to be good is to say that the blender development fund rejected anthropic's sponsorship offer

@thibaultmol @UkeleleEric @eden @Blender that's not how psychology works
money comes with strings stretched whether you can see them or not, whether they're talked about or not

@Blender Although the person behind this account may not even be involved in the agreement, it is still a bad idea. It's taking blood money from an entity hostile to creatives. That threat to their livelihoods alone is bad already. But the party involved is actively supporting fascism. As in: Destroying lives, human and nature alike.
Not cool, man. Not cool.
There must be better ways to get funding. Better does not always mean easy, but there are better ways.

@Blender Amazingly terrible decision. Just stunning. Accepting money from some demonstrably horrible org like Anthropic aligns you with them and their values. Are these your values now?
Return the money, refuse it, or whatever - or, I suppose, show that you can be bought and that you don't actually care about anyone but yourselves.

All right, Francesco here - CEO at Blender. I'm going to spend some time to try and respond. If you have direct questions or comments, reply here!
