The snap worked, but only so so:

Now ffmpeg didn't find its component ffprobe, despite it being part of the snap.

God, I hated Linux in that moment!

    So, away with the snap.

Read the ffmpeg documentation, found the list of its libraries, reinstalled them all and then, finally, everything worked.

But: Am I right or not?

This is not something a normal person would consider a viable solution.

Once I tried to use Linux but I could never get used to that operating system. It is very clean, very fluid, does not consume a lot of resources but I encountered many incompatibility problems, I had to be doing one and another modification and I wasted more time than taking advantage of its virtues.

I think it was also my lack of knowledge or I do not know but the year I used it was very turbulent 🤣

I am using it probably since you were born (around 1995. I think, this might be about right).

Normally, it's dead easy, unless it's not.

However, I ditched Windows completely when I tried to switch from XP to Windows 10 and too much of my hardware wasn't supported anymore.

Windows 10, even 11, I think have been the most problematic Windows versions of all time in terms of performance issues. You have to have a state of the art computer to run them well, like the desktop I have in my office that I bought two years ago 🤣

Linux is very good but for video editing and rendering it falls short for me. It's not the most used OS in the world for nothing, even though it has all the things we like about it, such as its free and open source.

I actually do quite some video editing on Linux, I did so even when I still had Windows (and a paid software - Avid-Studio Professional), but found Kdenlive just as capable.

But I never did video editing on a professional level, so that I had to use Adobe products (€€€😱).

Davinci-Resolve works on Linux, but it's too picky with its hardware requirements.

It's what I use the most, Adobe for professional editions, and it costs a lot $$$$ 😬.

I tried to use other programs on Linux but they were very basic, they don't have all the tools of Adobe programs.

And on Linux I could never run Adobe's, I tried several distros, I don't know what else and it never met my expectations for the use of certain programs.

Maybe it was my ignorance, I didn't know how to use Linix or I don't know but it left me very bad experiences in professional use.

Adobe doesn't provide Linux versions of their programs, only for Windows and Mac.

As I said, for hobby use or for YouTube videos, kdenlive on Linux is just fine.

For TV quality and commercials, you need Adobe or DaVinci.

Better to use Windows natively or find a different way to do things.

@mina@berlin.social @NatalyMillan@mastodon.social Thanks to steam and proton it works very well for Games these days. Sometimes even more performant than on native Windows, which is surprising. (I suspect Game Devs do optimizations for the Steam Deck that runs on Linux)

But i do agree on every other Software - Always a pain with Wine. It is always a compromise.

@mina@berlin.social @NatalyMillan@mastodon.social Steam (They are by no way perfect) did a very good Job with Proton. Using their steam installer almost every Windows only Game works without any adjustments on Linux.
