the tech industry is one case where this is very obvious. they pretend to love "open source" but only use it either to get free labor, or for free publicity. it was never about digital rights or user autonomy for them

they centralize everything, having these huge silos, and then make sure it is as difficult as possible to switch away. in case of social media and chat, using our friends as hostages against us. they then demand more and more from the user, knowing they can't switch away. they ask for your phone number, get a "real name" policy, and at some point will start verifying your age

now with llms, this became even more obvious. they never cared about quality software, they never cared about ethical, private or secure software. they went full-in on slop the moment their management thought it was an option

and then we have drm like the aosp hardware attestation, google play integrity, etc. we have google putting itself as the authority on what you should be able to install on your own device. apple has been in this authority position since the start, so it's not like apple is an alternative

the only way a tech project can truly be in the interest of its users, is when it is collectively owned by the community around it, without any significant corporate involvement

this is to say, we need to band together. we need to liberate ourselves. corporations are not going to do this for us. do not let them deceive you
