@Blender congrats on securing funding, I get this is important for opensource projects.
personally I don't get the outrage, Meta, Wacom, Nvidia, Microsoft, AMD, Adobe, Apple, and Netflix weren't scary enough but Anthropic does it?
how do people think opensource projects get funded@anthropy @Blender
while those companies are scummy as hell, at least they produce a product.
anthropic essentially just walks into public art exibits, takes shitty photos without asking the artist and then sells those as prints at low prices driving the original artist out of buisness.
They literally cannot function without theft. -

@Blender as an artist, professional designer, someone professionally familiar with LLMs and rejecting the practices of their trainers and providers, I think especially given your user base this is an exceptionally bad decision and the signal this sends should have been considered much more carefully.

@dianaprobst @Blender To be fair: This donation does not mean that every change of code at Blender from tomorrow on will be "in favor of Anthropic and their hunger for every bit of information on the planet." It just killed Blenders integrity for now.
But a change in update-strategy these days is adviced: Check what's being changed, what's being fixed and if you truly need the update on day one. If not, wait at least for a week or so and see what the consensus of the user-base says.

@miss_rodent @Blender Well said. I just want to comment with all the traction this is getting, this isn’t it guys. It’s photography, it’s graphic art, it’s business, it’s jobs, it’s every nook and cranny you look and despite being told otherwise tech is bleeding people. If this gets more people thinking that’s great, because the tech has been here redifining human worth for a while now.
-
@fsiddi Also what does "it's a donation" even mean? Does this mean you would accept a donation from any organization, no matter how sketchy it is?
@art_codesmith Personally I find this a difficult ethical question. The conditions under which a donation is received matter. In this case it's raising a lot of concern.

@art_codesmith
1. It's a donation
2. I expected a concerned/negative response like for other corporate memberships in the past, hence we try to make it very clear that this is just a donation. This is quite intense. -

@Blender@mastodon.social Now glad I never expended any effort learning how to drive Blender.

They literally cannot function without theft.@ChocoDrawing @Blender most of those companies have produced image generators of their own.
I get why artists are upset about genAI, but then why not get some money from that branch back to the artists? as long as blender doesn't make blender worse, I don't see any (new) issue to be honest

@thibaultmol @UkeleleEric @eden @Blender
Step1. They send a big loave of cash
Step2. That cash becomes important to your anual budget
Step3. 2-3 years on, they subtly pass the message about their preferences regarding future projects, road mapping, et al (or else funding "could" be "thought about")
Step4. The coin drops in your brain
Step5. You've been taken over and your current working model is fucked (if not the whole endeavour)But probably I'm just being paranoid. It ain't as if... wait
@barrionomia @thibaultmol @UkeleleEric @eden @Blender yeah that is usually how that works. However, Anthrophic's money becoming part of the annual budget is unlikely. They would need to still exist by next year.

@Blender Some of the most miserable news I've heard out of software lately.
Taking the US Military Industrial Complex's blood money is reason enough to switch tools.
Giving corporate AI slop-peddlers influence over what features the devs are to prioritize doesn't give me faith in the tool's future either.
Fucking shameful.
