@janantos Anthropic is not buying anything, and there are no expectations attached to this. We have been putting a lot of effort in reporting development activities in our annual reports: https://www.blender.org/about/foundation/ - i hope this helps.
@fsiddi absolutely, thanks for your transparent reply, tbh I don’t understand the scream of some part of community. I understand there is some affection against AI and I to some degree understand why, but extreme edges of both parties (pro and anti) are making harm. Nothings black&white.

All right, Francesco here - CEO at Blender. I'm going to spend some time to try and respond. If you have direct questions or comments, reply here!
@fsiddi If you, as the Blender foundation, stand against Anthropic and send that money back, you will be the hero project artists need right now.
Artists are your users for heavens sake. Support them! Fight for their rights! Stand against a company which is actively trying to replace them!
You have a huge opportunity here to do good, in the most public way possible. If you tell Anthropic to take the money back, you will be all over the news and trust me, not in a bad way.

@Blender congrats on securing funding, I get this is important for opensource projects.
personally I don't get the outrage, Meta, Wacom, Nvidia, Microsoft, AMD, Adobe, Apple, and Netflix weren't scary enough but Anthropic does it?
how do people think opensource projects get funded -

> In these uncertain and divisive times, we appreciate Anthropic offering support to the Blender project [...]
I wanted to write some thoughtful reply to that, but you know what..
Simply, fuck off.
@siwek @Blender Embracing Anthropic is unacceptable.
Is there any human in history who didn't say about his/her time that it was uncertain and difficult?
Gee, I wonder why our time is so uncertain and divisive. Answer: It's because greedy capitalists such as Anthropic are concentrating all power in the hands of a few rich men, while they devalue labor and art. And the division happens because the smarter people realize this while others who are tricked by the endless lies and propaganda do not.
Blender's take then really is something, embracing those responsible for the division and uncertainty to begin with, while using the age-old trope of "uncertain times" as their motivation and justification.
What people don't do for money. Sellouts. I'm very disappointed in Blender.

@Blender Ethics aside, this is problematic for several reasons, among them:
1. Knowingly taking donations from an organization is implicit endorsement
2. You are legitimizing a company whose business model and MO undermines your users
3. You risk becoming financially dependent on an entity whose goals are diametrically opposed to yoursThis is incredibly short sighted and doubly problematic if donations are recurring, regardless of any strings attached.

@Blender the Python Software Foundation showed that respect of its community is more important than money.
You can do the same.

@Blender
IMO, the problem is the Corporate Membership program itself:
https://download.blender.org/institute/BF_Development_Fund_Membership.pdf
In §5, you promise to keep companies' secrets. In §3, you offer (a) better transparency to these companies than the public gets, (b) allow companies to guide your priorities, & (c) special access to your staff at multiple levels.
If your agreement actually said clearly that the donations are no-strings-attached & you won't endorse or promote these companies, I think accepting #Anthropic
'd be ok.

@fsiddi I hope that you reconsider their donation, or at least temporarily postpone it until you have a discussion with the Blender community. I understand and am sorry that things are hard right now with all this negative sentiment, but I also understand that these people are hurt by this donation. I also hope this can lead to a good faith discussion with the Blender Foundation and the Blender community on AI and Blender in general.

@chrishuck @Blender Are we really going to throw away the best open source 3D creation software we have because Anthropic is giving them cash?
-
Note: partially reworded the social media announcement so it sounds less tone-deaf about the controversial nature of the membership.
@Blender can I introduce you to the German meaning of "Blender".
Ein Blender (- a Blender) is a show off, a snake oil salesman, someone who loves to appear as something they aren't.
It has the same root as Verblendung the miss direction or hubris.
Or geblendet an old word meaning being blind mostly used today if some one gets distracting light thrown into their eyes but also related in the past to being blind by something else like thrown sand.
Can I give you applause for bridging the language gap?

@art_codesmith @ric @Blender As weird as it may sound, and please note that i am against both: I would rather have blender pay anthropic than the other way around.
A subscription can be cancelled, but this shit is public and way more harmful. Anthropics encroachment on foss has to be stopped and fought.
