@chrishuck @Blender Are we really going to throw away the best open source 3D creation software we have because Anthropic is giving them cash?
-
Note: partially reworded the social media announcement so it sounds less tone-deaf about the controversial nature of the membership.
@Blender can I introduce you to the German meaning of "Blender".
Ein Blender (- a Blender) is a show off, a snake oil salesman, someone who loves to appear as something they aren't.
It has the same root as Verblendung the miss direction or hubris.
Or geblendet an old word meaning being blind mostly used today if some one gets distracting light thrown into their eyes but also related in the past to being blind by something else like thrown sand.
Can I give you applause for bridging the language gap?

@art_codesmith @ric @Blender As weird as it may sound, and please note that i am against both: I would rather have blender pay anthropic than the other way around.
A subscription can be cancelled, but this shit is public and way more harmful. Anthropics encroachment on foss has to be stopped and fought.

@amosmulder We do consider where the money is coming from. In this case it looks like there was not enough consideration.
Considering you are accepting code assisted with Claude as well. As was pointed out in other toot, no, you didnt considered anything AT ALL.
This wouldn't happened if @tonroosendaal was still at the helm.
Do you realize it reflects on how the users will see the board members from now on?
You throw the project and your personal credibility into a tar pit. Congratulations. 🤬

@Blender@mastodon.social
How to not read the room?
This.
This is how you punch your very friends (aka users) right into the kisser. -

It's too late for you to come and put out the fire.
You have breached the trust of your users. Artists, whether amateur or professional, are particularly vulnerable to AI scraping.
In fact, you didn't need anyone to tell you that. You knew as much and did this anyway.
Remember when Google decided to help the Chinese government build a firewall to control its citizens?
This is a parallel moment. People foolishly continued to use Google after it showed who it really was. Not in 2026.

@art_codesmith
1. It's a donation
2. I expected a concerned/negative response like for other corporate memberships in the past, hence we try to make it very clear that this is just a donation. This is quite intense. -

@fsiddi @cczona i think if money did not equal influence you wouldnt be seeing this reaction in your supporters. its clearly influencing something. inducing this huge upheaval in your support base means proportionally more users supporters and contributors that are pro ai. the conclusions arent hard to reach.
