@FediTips Thanks! OED has /vɛrnisaʒ/, so it seems we've not anglicised it. It's not a word I was aware of. (I'd been mentally trying to say it as an awkward 4-syllable German or Norwegian word.)

I'm not a linguist but would guess this is due to relatively recent influence of French art world.

(Whereas something like "homage" is medieval and has an English pronunciation /ˈhɒmɪdʒ/ )

@FediTips And it turns out the Norwegian version is vernissasje, with a silent -e. So nearly the same.

@FediTips The earliest occurrence the OED has is 1912, so I think you're right. It's basically a French word being used in English.

I'm not in a position to talk from experience of usage, but Vernissage seems to be the one to use if EXIF meta data matters to you and Pixelfed if you only want images
