I'm not a linguist but would guess this is due to relatively recent influence of French art world.

(Whereas something like "homage" is medieval and has an English pronunciation /ˈhɒmɪdʒ/ )

@FediTips And it turns out the Norwegian version is vernissasje, with a silent -e. So nearly the same.

I'm not in a position to talk from experience of usage, but Vernissage seems to be the one to use if EXIF meta data matters to you and Pixelfed if you only want images
