I learned two things this weekend. One is that Samsung refrigerator/freezers have a “Demo Mode” where everything seems to be running normally, but all the actual cooling functions have been disabled. And the other is that you can activate this mode by leaning against the door the wrong way
@jalefkowit I know I'm saying the quiet part out loud here, but, I mean...
What does a refrigerator have to demo besides keeping food cold?

why is it that all the "smart" appliances mostly seem to be "appliances that really smart to own"...
i propose calling them "overly complicated appliances" instead.

@jalefkowit Gotta love the "Smart Appliances".

@jalefkowit don't you miss when appliances were just appliances?
I make a point at buying the dumbest, most baseline (with features I want), simplest, least complex, least electronic laden models of 2-3 brands. I usually avoid anything Korean.

@jalefkowit We got a Samsung refrigerator when we bought our house and we will not be repeating the experience.
-
@jalefkowit the touch panel? how do you know if demo mode is on, other than the smell, eventually?
@fishidwardrobe @jalefkowit depends as to whether the thermostat display puts up fake numbers in demo mode

I donated my Samsung refrigerator to someone on Facebook who desperately needed a refrigerator.I warned them. Every time the power goes out the fucking refrigerator goes into fucking demo mode when the power is restored which means it looks like it’s cooling, but it’s not cooling which means anytime I’m out of town. I have to have somebody house sit or go by every day in case the fucking power went out or glitched even for a second.
When I contacted Samsung about this problem, they acknowledged it, but said for me it’s my fault for living with a shitty power company. I live in a hurricane prone area. The power goes out a lot.. I’m not kidding you the fucking Samsung engineer said that to me get a better source of power. Never buy a Samsung product never never buy a fucking Samsung product never.
@CheapPontoon @jalefkowit @machias "you're holding it wrong"

An interesting name for Defrost Mode.

What in the effing world can be "demoed" for a fridge except for ... cooling?!??
@knud "it works like this, the screen looks like this, if you open the door the light turns on, you can tap here for x function or y function", this while the seller shows it to you. Just like the TVs looping a video trying to showing off their brightest colours and deepest blacks.
Almost all "smart" appliances today have a "store" or "demo" mode. It shouldn't be that easy to turn on, but leave it to Samsung to dark-pattern it into existence.

Friends w/ Samsung fridges have told me that many repair folks will not touch those refrigerators.

@jalefkowit uncool feature

@jalefkowit aside from anything else, why does a fridge even have a demo mode? what else could it be demonstrating other than "being cold"?
@vksxypants @jalefkowit the little indicator panel on the front and the light coming on when you open the door, so that a store can have it plugged in without keeping an empty fridge cold (x 50 other fridges in the store). Completely useless except to refrigerator retailers, I can kind of see why it would exist though.
But this seems like something you would control with recessed switches inside a panel at the back or something if it exists at all.
-
@jalefkowit wait, what? They ship their actual consumers models with a built in demo mode?
We live in the age of insanity

@CheapPontoon @jalefkowit @machias 15 years ago Honda built a 'British road' in Hokkaido wth shitty road surface and loads of potholes so they could test cars against conditions they don't find in Japan (where the roads are surfaced to match the climate now instead of the climate 40 years ago and cars are generally still normal sized instead of domestic tanks).
Sounds like Samsung needs to build an 'American grid' in Busan.

@jalefkowit Remember when appliances just did what they were supposed to do?

@CheapPontoon @jalefkowit @machias If someone with this sort of problem has the space and the money to do so, plugging the fridge into a suitably sized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) should help. The UPS will complain if it runs out of power, and it will shield the fridge from brief power flickers. It doesn't have to run the fridge for long, it just needs to be able to supply enough amps during the outage to keep the fridge's computer running. 1/
